It is going to take some time to feel comfortable in a new creative setting for everyone. Everything Is so different and the gratification of stars no longer exist. But the art talent within each DQ person is still there to be challenged. I think after the shock of having to leave such a comfortable creative environment has passed the comfort zone will once again return. There has to be something good about SC. Some of our most talented people are already on there and have been for quite some time. On the up side communication seems pretty easy to happen there without having to chat in the drawings. I know there are good and bad things allowing comments but we should try and enjoy the journey to our new place. We can always be on the look out for a better place to do our art while learning at sc. Let's try and keep an open mind and also work on the ones that are afraid to move. No one wants to be left behind.

See? It is personal feeling, i felt the same hydro-repellency (at very first) with SC app. A part of the pay-for-draw option that is a no no for me, i browsed an entire day on his pages online, interacting with people while they draw (live stream) and reading comments (also read sarcastic, snobbing the exodus of exDQesters), and i felt out of place. That is exactly the kind of mentality that put DQ in this position. Expecting to have a free app makes it nearly impossible to sustain, in particular when you take into consideration that all that art has to be stored somewhere, and server hosting and maintenance does not come cheap. I don't know how many people complained about paying for the brushes and bucket and additional colors if they didn't have the coins. And as far as the comments, had you stayed long enough, you would have seen that for every @$$clown with something to say about DQ, there are 10 extremely nice and caring people willing to help. I get it, you don't like the tool, so you would rather focus on the negative, but I think that type of FUD makes it impossible for people to reach a level-headed decision. no comment & good luck

No one wants to be left behind. Actually, you still get that star gratification as the "thumbs up". The funny thing is I have yet to receive a negative comment there (after a year and more than 150 drawings), but I have seen a couple of fellow DQers who just made the jump (probably on the younger side) rip one SC artist a new one because he did a nude (tastefully, I may add) and they told this person he/she was a pervert.

I actually like the learning experience although somewhat stressful. The art there is amazing and some artist like on DQ are incredible. I have a question if you don't mind helping me. Those little symbols next to the pictures. What does the one that looks like an eye mean. It gives you the number of thumbs up and comments then there is an eye with a number.? I can't find any info on the symbols. Is it a negative point accumulation? Chazer you have been a very positive force on SC for the DQ's.

The eye is the number of people who have viewed the picture. Nothing more! :-) I have yet to see someone post a fail, and my bet is the only ones getting them are those who post something too distasteful to be posted.

At last, the week end! I can start playing a bit more with the other drawing apps. Because time is limited, I can use only 1 new home. I have to choose. Drawcast : if Chazer says I should stay there longer, I went back to give it a try.. I did not succeed loading already made drawing due to background limitation, as DC seems to support only black and white background. Also, I admit that I am now scare of a free apps. When will this one close on me? On to sketchclub . I feel that I am cheating in SC. So much can be done. Not like on DQ where you ability to master the tool has only a small influence on the result. So DQ was for me more like a real paper drawing. There was no layer there. That being said, SC is more digital drawing. I LOVE LOVE love the layers capability! The basic layer is simple to use. And I am totally having a blast in the tool . That is causing a problem since there is so much to experiment that I have not yet posted my First SC drawing. In the end, I may end-end with less drawings. It is ok, as long as I have fun. And so far, everyone on SC have been nice. So my decision, since no more DQ, is to move to SC. Hope to see you there! P.s. Don't get me wrong! If DQ was still to existing that would my home.

Don't go to the dark side Lami?! I don't like the "cheat" aspect of SC either. It's like not really drawing it yourself. But my DQ peeps are as important to me as drawing so I guess I will follow them to SC but I'm having a hard time drawing there. It's not simple and straightforward like DQ. And as someone who's never drawn before. I learned to be an actually artist of sorts. I don't want to use a zillion tools that make a computer drawing that I really didn't draw myself. It's so hard for me to draw myself on that SC app. Too much stuff going on. Too photoshoppy but alas I will try my damndist! If you guys are willing I guess I will try too.

I find this an interesting argument. Cheating... not cheating. Did classical painters thought modern painters cheated when they started buying the colors in a store instead of mixing them themselves? Did the expressionists thought the cubists cheated because they didn't use realistic human shapes? Did pencil and paper artists think we cheat by using digital canvases and a stylus? I don't think using layers makes you a cheater. It is just a different style of drawing. I will agree on one thing however: using only one layer is a much more challenging and therefore a better learning tool for a beginner. Using layers all the time will make it difficult to make a style your own.

Ok, I have been setting up SC like DQ a bit. Regcas, I hope this helps you get started! I have set-up up the right left palette (shortcut) with my favourite color, a bit like the DQ chart. This is done by holding the stylus on the color. The color wheel will appear. You select the one you want in your shortcut palette. Brush: pick the type that looks like DQ. Pen: pick the type that looks also like DQ. Patty the paint can is in layer menu if you want to use it. That's it. Very simple setting. Last, there is a SC live stream class next week Thu, offer by some very nice SC member just for us! I will try to attend but I a am working at that time. Odds are low. (Ok, I did my 2nd drawing and ended up using 5 layers and some fancy brush for spotting. But I like the fact that each drawing has statistics about how they were made. So you can see how much a person cheated. it seems you can upload a real photo and draw on it, Mr. Oribble has been having quite some fun with this!)

Chazer I understand your thoughts on " cheating". Maybe that want the best word to use. My feeling is all the tools on SC are cool but I wouldn't have learned how to draw and paint myself on that app as much as I learned on DQ. It forced me to learn a lot including using my imagination. I never took an art class. I just learned by drawing every day and watching others. SC has cool tools and stuff and I'll use them once I learn how. I just liked the simplicity and imaginative aspects of DQ. Okay no more DQ. Thank you Lami so much for sharing your thoughts on how to use SC to my liking. I will try but I'm still unsure of where that stuff is. My friends are most important to me in will try drawing on SC and maybe some other apps. It's all good as long as we are together. I've never known an app to have a community of people especially one Ike this one. It's amazing. I love it. I will follow you.... Follow you where ever you may go... There isn't an ocean to deep... A mountain so high it can't keep... Keep me away ... Away from my love!!!! ??

Hey, sup? I'm new around here. I got an idea of contacting art institutions and colleges about supporting DQ but i don't really know how to approach this and i haven't asked DQ staff about it yet. Drawquest is a great learning tool to develop art skills and creativity and it's especially useful for children and i noticed there's tons of kids on draw quest, even younger than 10, and i'm not quite sure if sketch club would be the best choice for them since it looks like and handles like a pro tool. I mean everybody could learn how to use it by trial and error but for a little kid whose native language is not english it might be a little more challenging than tapping on a picture of a brush and a color wheel. That's why i thought it might be interesting for art institutions and colleges to see the results of such a widespread and easy to use tool since studies of contemporary visual culture also focus on creative works of children, art laymen and artworks created with nontraditional tools. There's even been an exposition of litograph prints that were created with an ipad (or some other tablet computer, i'm not sure) around here. What are your thoughts on this? PS: I'm not a native english speaker myself so i'm sorry if my english seems wierd or wrong. PPS: check me out on DQ my name's xycat and i've seen your artworks which were pretty awesome!

Ok, I said I would report on my boy learning SC. Well... It is a success. Once he got pass the fancy interface, he was ok. It does help with mommy guiding him in his learning. Does he like it? His answer is yes, because of the comments the nice people leave and his ability to also leave comments (who would have thought!) I suspect that since we are having such a hard time just getting into DQ, that may be part of his appreciation of SC. Anyways, goal achieved! He can continue to practice fine movements with his hands, in a fun way.

You don't have to cheat! I do many of my drawings using only one layer and only two brushes. Truth be told, got so used with the way we do things in DQ that it is a bit of a hassle sometimes using layers. Hummm. But how to resist the cheat? I am being pulled on the dark side and liking it Ok, I have done a couple of drawings on SC, and I have been well received. HOWEVER, I don't get all the tools, especially don't get the layers! Someone pointed me to a 'layers class', I went there and it was gonna be 2 hours and very sluggish! I have been checking out other's artwork, looking at their stats etc, OMG some of those drawings take more than 40 hours !!! I'm telling you I don't have or want to take that kind of time. I have to cook, clean do laundry, shop (especilially shop) etc. So for now, I'm gonna ignore the tools I don't understand (layers) and treat this app like DQ, and use the pen, the brush, the smudge, the blur and oh maybe the eraser too. I will continue to use DQ (tho it is very sluggish and many of my drawings have been lost) while trying to get more comfortable with SC. I have seen some DQ refugees there and it is heartwarming! Lami, Wilso, Tinazend, to name a few. I will not go to the dark side, I will not (try not) become negative. I did get an e-mail from DQ asking me to spend some real money to buy something. It said if everyone just spent 99 cents, they could keep the app up for years. Nothing to buy but can and coins, have the can, have plenty of coins that are absolutely useless, so I bought more useless coins to do my part! Thanks for listening to this expose!!!

Yes, i fully agree. Some of those drawings are really impressive. One of the best of all time, the eye, just blew me away. 40 hours!!! No way!!! Like you, I don't have that time to invest! I have been using a very limited amount of layers, brush, pen (my max layer was 5) and once you know how to use those, they can be time saver. I admit that I also like layer for experimenting when I am hesitant about something. And no, I did not take a 2 hours class, just played with it to be able to do the basic.
For sure, I do not plan to use daily any of the procedural brushes. And I am not too found of the upload image as template. But, as I said somewhere, when someone cheat, you can see it in the stats. So maybe it is not that cheating after all. Looking forward seeing more of your drawing there!

You don't have to use layers (although layers can be explained in like, five minutes) or spend 40 hours (most of my drawings take less than 30 minutes to make) to do something meaningful. Another thing to consider is that in SC you can literally save your drawing and continue work on it later, so maybe you can have your regular every day project, and then have a long term project if there is something more ambitious you want to work on. That is at the end the issue that has been baffling me with several people using the tool. The main source of complaint is "I don't get all the other tools" or "I can't draw like so and so". Well... no one is asking you to use all the tools or sketch like the best pro either! You can make the app as easy or as complicated as you want it to be. If you don't have some time to spare and want to try a new brush then so be it. The sad part is seeing people stop trying because of self imposed restrictions (as in, if I don't get the additional brushes, then I won't use the app).
