For me, THE most frustrating component of ipad drawing is the stylus. I've burned through at least a half dozen since I got my ipad last year. Who's got some good stylus tips? (pun intended) And is it just me, or does it seem harder to draw on DrawQuest than some of the other drawing apps?

Drawquest is the first drawing app I have ever used so I don't know if it is harder than others, but sometimes I notice I have a hard time drawing circles and curvy lines. The app makes them all jagged. Then there is the undo button. it works better than it used to, but it still freezes up. Arg! I find it hard to get very detail oriented and draw small stuff with my stylus, so I am pretty amazed by some of the artwork DQ ers are churning out!

I think each drawing app reacts differently to a stylus. I felt like I was all thumbs when I started drawing on Sketchbook pro....plus it was overwhelming trying to master all the tools. I started playing Draw Something and achieved some competence with really basic dwg. tools plus getting comfortable with a stylus. I also forced myself to sketch fast...a good exercise. Draw Quest is taking me to the next level. I just use cheap rubber tip styluses. I have a fiber tip one on order at Amazon. I will review it here after I take it out for a spin. One thing I prefer is a longer stylus because my wrist keeps hitting the dwg controls with a stubby one.
I am amazed that Dr Cupcake does her dwgs without a stylus.
My thoughts for what they're worth, riverrapp

I'm very glad this subject was brought up. I bought a fairly inexpensive stylus and it has lasted me a long time. I'm ready to upgrade though. I'm considering getting the Wacom stylus. I'm an avid stylus user in general. I'm still debating about it though. I agree Riverrapp, I have a couple of drawing apps and I found them too overwhelming. I ended up just liking to use Drawing Pad. Until I get better at drawing in general and on the Ipad , the less complicated features the better for me.

I'm using a fairly cheap stylus and it works fine most of the time though I find you have to allow for the thickness of the screen to be anywhere near accurate. I do wear a glove for doing detailed work as I like to rest my hand on the screen. Has anyone tried a stylus with a see-through plastic tip? Dagi make them I think and I was wondering if it was worth the investment. TOTALLY in awe of DrCupcake, I cannot draw with my finger at all - perhaps we should try it as a challenge!

I bought a cheap stylus and it is pretty much unusable for drawing, then I bought a more expensive one because I thought the cheap one was broken, but the new one worked exactly the same way. I guess I wasn't meant to use one, so I just draw with my finger and it makes my handwriting look horrible. I am learning so much by watching the playbacks. Draw Something and Draw Quest have helped my improve my doodling skills, but ever since the last DQ update, I hardly play Draw Something anymore. Thank you K3LLI for creating this forum for us.

MimiSACo I bought a few Dagi stylus (got a good deal buying direct, used them for gifts) and sorry to say that the version that I got didn't last too long. After a few weeks (some of them only worked for days), they didn't register on screen. If you're looking for disc-type stylus to do precision work, Adonis Jot (pro) is the one to recommend. They have much superior build quality and there's a precision made ball-joint on the disc-part to ensure smooth swiveling motion and can last longer than the Dagi version. Dagi uses spring there. Btw, there's also a DIY version that works really well... (have to look up the link), I've tried that in the past (for handwriting, because I didn't draw) and it worked just as well as the jot for me.

leosketchy thank you for the stylus recommendation! I had seen the Dagi but not the Adonit Jot. Think I might have to try that one. @dr Cupcake and Alzheimer129--I am in awe that you draw with your finger. Amazing!!

I use the Wacom Bamboo stylus along with my trusty finger. I use my finger when filling in a large section so it puts less stress on the rubber nib of my stylus.

kingrum--Using the finger for larger areas makes sense. That's at least partially why I've blown through so many cheap styluses, I'm guessing. Do you mean the wacom bamboo stylus that comes with the bamboo drawing pad? Or is there one made especially for touch screen devices?

Thank you leosketchy that is really useful and saved me wasting my money. I have read that you can use ordinary copper wire from electric cable in a homemade bamboo holder but I am nervous about scratching the screen. Having some sort of insulator between my hand and the screen is vital to me!

@mimi: np i'm also looking to get a glove of some sort so i can rest my hand on the screen. Any recommendation? Btw, here is the video of a DIY capacitive screen stylus made from hdd wrapping (or chips wrapper) material. It looks real ghetto, but the feel is even better than adonis jot pro imho! Really light and natural (because you can use your own pen body of choice) and it glides smoothly with soft tip kn the screen. But lifetime is short due to the materials. I've made a couple back when i tried to use ipad to take notes on. Given up on that soon after (cause of the app). If i'd been drawing back then, i would love the pen a lot more youtu.be/vHhB2BF5yQM

As for the glove any old one will do - I use whatever I can find at the time, even inside out ones if I can't find the right hand one. I'm going to try to find an old leather pair so I can cut off the tips of thumb and forefinger for a better grip.

The stylus I have is about as big as the tip of my pinkie finger, so I have found it just about useless for drawing. I am going to try to whip one up at home now. Thanks for the idea, LeoSketchy. I am a huge fan of your art, btw. And you, too MimiSACo. I love the texture and patterns you make. Your sea creatures pointillism inspired me to try something similar with my drawing of a Siren.

Thanks hagatha! I'm sorely lacking in skill and art training (nil) so i try to make up with interesting ideas and subjects!

I am surprised at what a short life some members' styluses (styli?) have had. I bought a pair from Amazon in December and they're still going strong - I alternate between them. They were only £2.99 for the pair. The only shortcoming is that I would like the tip to be finer, the same as most styluseses. This is the description from Amazon site:
pm0505x2 First2savvv white Touch screen stylus pen for iphone 5 4S iphone 4 ipad mini, ipad 2 ipad 3 & ipad 4 with retina display & Samsung galaxy SIV S4 & Note 8.0

Having gone through a good dozen cheap stylus options I have to agree with LeoSketchy that if you are looking for precision go with the Adonit Jot Pro stylus. Unlike about every other stylus on the market it lets you see exactly where your point touches down. It's the only stylus I've used that actually feels like I'm using a fine tipped pen to draw with. That is my hands down choice... however, there are a couple of serious technical issues to be aware of if you choose this stylus...
1.) Because of the hard plastic on screen nature of the tip it produces a weird hard 'clack' sound every time your stylus touches down. It's actually kind of loud and depending on your drawing style you could end up making a lot of noise with repeated stylus taps. I've heard some complain that they don't like the sound or the tactile sensation of the hard contact. It doesn't bother me at all but it's something to be aware of.
2.) Another weird and serious thing I have noticed is that because of the design of the tip, my particular stylus seemed to lose its 'smoothness' over time. Meaning that what once was a silky smooth uninterruped drawn contact line became a little inconsistent and stuttery over time. This was because the coating on the tip of the stylus ball was wearing off and it was affecting the disc's screen contact. Adonit was really cool about this and sent me free replacement tips... but in the end I looked at forums and found a very effective solution. I purchased a small tube of thermal conductivity fluid (found at Radio Shack or any electronics store) and applied a tiny dab to the ball. I know it sounds like a lot of legwork but goodness it improved the the stylus tip tremendously. It made it silky smooth and flawless and it's the most precise stylus anywhere. So while your Jot Pro might not have this issue just know that it could arise and if it does, there is a very effective and easy fix for it.
